And here are llama and donkey together.

I got to thinking, and yesterday’s post about backlighting may have been a little confusing. To clarify: the sun doesn’t always have to be at your back in order to take interesting, even beautiful images. When I spoke of backlighting, I meant light coming from behind the subject of the photograph. That’s the case of this photo of the animal friends.

There is a little lens flare (the spots on Donkey’s hip). But that was intentional. Lens flare is much in vogue and I’ve been trying to figure out how to use it to the best advantage. If you were shooting in a similar situation and didn’t want lens flare, you could use a lens hood. In a pinch, use your hand or a hat to shade your lens from the sun.

I tinted this photo black and white to better showcase Donkey’s puff of steaming breath, which didn’t much show up in color. I think the blue/gray monochrome also helps illustrate the chilliness of the morning.
