Having some fun with Christmas lights –

I took this shot on December 2 while covering a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Scio, Oregon. (The Scio News is one of the community newspapers that I regularly do freelance writing and photography work for).

I slowed the shutter speed down and started moving the camera slightly then pressed the shutter release button, while still slowly moving the camera.

Wah-lah! Painting with light.  I posted about light painting earlier here.

If you haven’t experimented with this technique, you should definitely try it. It’s a lot of fun to see what kind of results you can get.

Happy day. And may all your holidays be bright (and light)!

  1. Interesting idea. I’ve done the long light exposure thing with speeding cars on the highways but never thought about doing it with tree lights. I’ll have to try this the next time I come across a Christmas tree.
