I went for a walk around Cheadle Lake on Thursday morning. Many geese were swimming in the lake. A few others were across a canal in a boggy, forested area. They may have been scouting out nesting sites. Not speaking fluent goose, I can’t be sure on that.

As I approached, the geese in the woods took to the air, dodging through the tree tops, flying low over my head before landing in the lake with their flock mates.

The beauty of the moment was that I had my camera out at the ready with lens cap off. I didn’t have the settings where I would have set them had I had a couple moments to change them. And I was shooting into the bright morning sun. But still, it made for some interesting shots.

I’m having a lot of fun going through this day’s “take” and working through post-processing options.

I like how the goose is lit from underneath.

The big bird was so close overhead, and with my 70-300 mm lens on, I couldn’t fit it all in the frame.

  1. lovely. I think at least half of the art of photography is knowing when to take the picture.

  2. I really like the bright sun creating the dark shadows in this pic…that combined with the composition make it really appealing to me. Nice one!
