These are catkins on a filbert or hazelnut tree.

They look a little like dancing ballerina feet, don’t they?

I took this photo a few days ago at t a local park. Later the catkins will open, loosen, provide pollen and then turn brown. This is from a wild hazel nut called California filbert.

Oregon is one of the world’s biggest producers of hazel nuts. I just learned that Germany is one of the biggest importers of our hazel nuts. A friend who just got back from a German vacation said they use them mostly ground up in baking.
