These equines belong to my friend Paty, a rancher and writer who lives in Central Oregon.

The horse is Bud, The donkey is George. George cracks me up. He has a huge personality and likes to “help” when Paty saddles Bud for a ride. George uses his teeth to do helpful things like rearrange the saddle blanket.

The little boy is my youngest child.

My sons and I went to Central and Eastern Oregon a couple of weekends ago to see Paty and visit my Uncle Allen in Burns.

It was approaching dusk when I took this shot. To let enough light into the camera sensor, I had to use a fairly long shutter speed. so the motion of my son’s hand as he stroked Bud is blurry.

When I was composing the shot, I liked how the animals’ faces were framed by the wooden hay feeder.
