This photo has elements of humor, as well as fear.

The bull fighter Eric’s tongue sticking out in concentration cracks me up. The snot or saliva that looks like a piece of hay sticking out of the bull’s mouth is funny. And the way the bull and his rider are both completely off the ground makes me think of marionettes on invisible strings with God as the puppeteer.

The fear part – will the rider be okay once he hits the ground?

This was especially fearful in my case. That’s my son-in-law getting launched in the air. His hand was wound up in the rope. It took awhile for him and Eric to get it freed. His hand swelled and was sore for a few days, but he was fine otherwise.

This was either the first or second time I’d watched my son-in-law (my daughter’s boyfriend at the time) and my daughter ride bulls. After seeing son-in-law Kirk get tangled in the rope and drug around, I was really worried about what would happen when it was my daughter’s turn.

She pretty much got some sort of injury every time she rode – broken finger, stomped leg etc. I’m glad she has changed rodeo sports to barrel racing. Kirk is now a bronc rider.

This photo was displayed in the Oregon Salon of Photography this past summer. It is a juried exhibition at the Oregon State Fair. I took this shot at Gorham’s Bucking Bulls on Rockhill Drive in Lebanon, Oregone.

I’ve taken many photos of bull riding, but this one remains a top favorite.

Kirk, on the other hand, isn’t in love with it. Bull riders like photos of themselves firmly on the bulls back, their cowboy hat firmly on their head and the bull’s back legs kicking higher than his head.
