This is a photo of chain links.

“Well, duh,” you say. And I don’t blame you at all for saying that.

But there is a method to my madness. I swear.

Today I’m launching a series about using figures in photography. I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about this series and taking photos in preparation for it.

Also I have a thing for rusty chains. I find some sort of profound beauty in them, which I try to capture with my cameras.

This particular chain is large. It’s on an old steam engine that sits in Avery Park in Corvallis, Oregon. My boys love going there where they can climb around on the train and pretend to be engineers.

“But wait!” you say. “There is no figure in the photograph.”

Exactly, is my answer. But there will be. Please check the next post for that.
