This is one of my current favorite photos.

I took it recently at Cheadle Lake in Lebanon, Oregon. My boys and I had gone to the lake to hike. The California poppies were in full, glorious bloom.

We saw six kayakers in the distance, paddling around the lake. I was happy when they paddled across to our side. I took some shots of them, but nothing spectacular.

I spoke to a couple of the women kayakers who paddled by close to shore, told them I’d taken their photos and how cool it looked with the orange poppies and yellow and orange kayaks. They teased one another about becoming famous super models.

And then I crouched down, as though I was shooting only the poppies and waited. Which is how I got this shot.

I took a series of frames with one and two kayakers, using the poppies as a foreground.

The composition of this one is my favorite.

So the lesson here is patience. See the shot in your mind. Plan for where you need to be to get it. And then hunker down and wait.
