South Beach Marina From an Airplane

Another shot at the Central Oregon Coast from the air. When the pilot asked me July 13, 2013 what I wanted to see, I said, “Pretty things,” so he flew to the coastline.

This is South Beach Marina, located on Yaquina Bay south of Newport.

South Beach is an unincorporated community with a population of about 1,100. The Newport Airport is located here. There are hotels in South Beach, a bed and breakfast and a few restaurants and breweries.

Click here for a map and satellite earth view of the area.

My first apartment was located in South Beach, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. My family and I like to visit South Beach a few times each year. There are some fun antique malls and shops, including one called Pirate’s Plunder. Also fun is the Hatfield Marine Science Center Oregon State University. It’s educational and free with living and static sea exhibits. Not free, but educational and interesting is the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The killer whale Keiko from the movie “Free Willy” once called the aquarium home. We like to visit the aquarium at Christmas. Volunteers deck the place out in lights and admission is next-to-nothing, plus some cans of food for the less fortunate. My niece and nephew play hand bells there at Christmas, so it’s an extra special time at the aquarium for my family.

Other South Beach attractions are the Oregon State Ship Operations and NOAA. Read about a new grant they were just chosen for here. Mike Miller County Park is located in South Beach, along with Wilder Dog Park and Oregon Coast Community College.

If you enjoy camping, South Beach State Park has many camp sites to choose from. We have enjoyed two camping trips there with extended family. And I’ve gone with a group of friends and our horses to ride on the beach.

Such a feeling of utter wonder and freedom to lope a horse along the ocean.

Flying in a small airplane over the coastline is pretty cool, too. To my brother, David – thanks for that birthday present!
