I built a fire in our outdoor fireplace the end of May and my sons and I roasted marshmallows and made s’mores.

When I walked up the hill beside our house to cut filbert branches to use as roasting sticks I spotted this baby bird perched on a small limb of the filbert tree.

The little bird was so homely it was cute. It sat and watched us through our entire marshmallow roast. I never saw a parent fly in to feed it, but judging from its color I think it was a baby gold finch.

When I was a child my mom called gold finches “wild canaries.” They have always been a special bird to me. So spending the evening with my boys, as well as watching and photographing this little bird made for a special occasion.
