An Accidental Photojournalist

Still rural after all these years

I’ve always loved to take photographs. My parents gave me my first Kodak for my tenth birthday, which was, well, sometime back. I ran around the farm, barefooted, dumb and happy, snapping roll after roll of film. My favorite subjects were my baby brothers, along with the farm animals, especially our ponies.

The theme of my favorite subjects hasn’t changed much. I still specialize in rural photography and work regularly for community newspapers and regional and national magazines. But it was sort of accidental that I wound up as a professional photojournalist.

I started out as a freelance writer. But editors wanted photos to illustrate the pieces I wrote, so the photography end of my work just fell into place. Sometimes now I’m contracted to do strictly photo shoots. Although most often, I still write text to enhance my photos.

I have another blog: It’s about miracles, visions and amazing things, often featuring photographs I’ve taken. My website: Or find me on Facebook – Danita Shattuck Cahill.

As a photographer, I’m a work in progress. I continue to learn and grow and discover. I make no claims to be an expert.

Please feel free to learn, grow and share with me. I’m sure I can learn much from many of you!
