This is Daisy the dog and “her” piglets.
The pigs were under the heat lamp, which is what adds the interesting, sort of surreal color to this shot. Daisy, the Border collie/heeler cross wasn’t looking at the piglets as dinner. Instead, she was gently herding them.
I captured this scene at Triangle J Farm in Albany, Oregon. I’ve featured several shots from the farm in the past couple of weeks.
“Farmer Julie” as my boys call her, said when piglets are born on the farm, if Daisy is given the chance, she will gather the piglets together and lie down on her side as if to nurse them.
Funniest part about this is that Daisy is only one-year-old and spayed – she has never been a mother.
Maternal instinct can be a powerful thing.
